The conversion tools supplied with 010 Editor can be used to convert bytes between ASCII format and EBCDIC format or vice versa. Select the 'Tools > Convert > ASCII to EBCDIC', or 'Tools > Convert > EBCDIC to ASCII' menu option to perform the conversion.

Conversion tools also exist to convert between ASCII format (1 byte per character) and UNICODE format (2 bytes per character) or vise versa. Use the 'Tools > Convert > ASCII to UNICODE', or 'Tools > Convert > UNICODE to ASCII' menu option to perform the conversion. Note that when converting to UNICODE, bytes will be inserted into the file (for example a string which is 4 bytes long in ASCII would be 8 bytes long in UNICODE). Similarly when converting from UNICODE to ASCII, bytes will be removed from the file. The conversion between ASCII and UNICODE will use either big-endian UNICODE or little-endian UNICODE depending upon the current endian settings (see Introduction to Byte Ordering for more information).

If no bytes are selected in the file when the conversion is performed, the conversion will be applied to every byte in the file. If a selection is made, the Convert dialog box will be displayed. In the dialog box, select the Selection toggle to convert only the selected bytes (the default), or Entire File to convert the whole file. Clicking OK will perform the conversion or clicking Cancel will close the dialog.

Files can also be converted to other formats using the 'File > Import Hex...' or 'File > Export Hex...' tools (see Importing/Exporting Files for more information).
